INITIAL SET-UP
Use this procedure to install fresh filter elements prior to use. It's best to
do this under clean conditions prior to using the system in the field.
- Remove thumbscrews and wing nuts from filtration unit container
and retain. Remove lid and set aside with opening facing up. Remove
hoses, noting their positions in the container for their later return.
- Turn collar of gray coupling at the outlet of the hand pump to the
right, loosen collar until coupler separates.
- Lift off the deck (containing the hand pump) and place it on lid.
- Using both hands, lift both filter canisters together and place on
a flat, dry work surface.
- Fully unscrew the filter canister at the pump outlet (Filter #1)
and remove it from the canister head. Use one hand to stabilize the
unit when breaking the seal.
- Do the same with Filter #2.
- With canister heads turned upright, insert a fresh large-pore Filter
#1 element. Position it so that its recess fits onto the center outlet
boss in the head of the canister.
- Lower the filter canister over the element, move it around until
the element's end seats onto the raised boss inside the canister.
Loosely tighten canister in canister head. This step may be a good time
to apply a thin coat of vaseline on the canister seals.
- Do the same with small-pore Filter #2.
- While using one hand to stabilize unit, hand tighten canister housings
until they are tightly sealed. If the element #2 is 0.5 micron with a
rubber washer and a restriction hole at one end, assure that this end is
inserted toward the canister head.
- Make sure both canister housings are screwed on tightly. Return
canisters to container bottom with canister ends contacting the foam
spacer.
- Return deck to position over filter canisters, align attachment holes
between deck and container bottom. Adjust canister position so the
output connector is approximately centered in its exit hole.
- Lubricate with vaseline if desired, then hand-tighten gray coupling.
- Store output hose by inserting it into opening in the deck; position
coiled input hose in open space next to pump so as to not obstruct lid.
Replace container lid, tighten thumb screws and wing nuts.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN HANDLING AND USING SYSTEM
Store filtration unit in a clean, dry location when not in use.
In operation, keep the output hose nozzle from contacting untreated water.
Completely submerge end of intake hose (with screen and foot valve)
in water to be treated; keep it away from sand, silt, or sediments. Don't use the container lid as a water receptacle.
Apply an even pressure on pump handle when using - don't force the pump, which can rupture its diaphragm and/or the pump's input check valve. Keep sharp objects away from the rubber pump diaphragm.
Note that the pump pressurizes the entire system volume and water continues to flow even during the pump up-stroke.
Disregard leaks. Expect the possibility of small leaks in the component connections - water from these harmless leaks will remain in the container bottom to be discarded later.
The filtration unit is rugged enough for mule packing and it can be carried
in any orientation, but don't shock the unit by dropping it on the ground.

SYSTEM OPERATION
Steps that follow are for filtering questionable water with the proper
filter elements already installed.
- Place filtration unit on a level spot close to water source; remove
thumb screws and wing nuts from container and set aside lid (do not
use as a water container). Return hardware to holes in deck and bottom
container and tighten - this is for stability while operating.
- Stretch out long intake hose to more easily screw the threaded end
to the pump. Position hose with the screen-protected foot valve into
nearby water; avoid loose sand or sediment.
- Install output hose to unit with the quick-attach connector; elevate
the nozzle for discharging water while flushing system.
- Operate pump to flush water through system; pump 30 strokes to
clear the system of entrapped air and allow water to flow smoothly.
- Place nozzle of output hose into container opening; pump water with
smooth, even strokes - do not use excessive force! Ignore any small
leaks at plumbing connections.
- When water containers are full, remove output house and replace
caps on containers; protect hose nozzle from contamination by securing it
inside a plastic zipper-lock bag.
- The intake hose may be left in the water for using the filtration unit
again later. The container lid may be used to partially cover the unit.
- When finished with the filtration unit, remove and drain hoses, drain
accumulated water by tipping unit, return hoses to storage locations,
and reassemble unit.
SYSTEM CLEANING
There are two operational modes for the filtration unit, each calling for a different
cleaning procedure.
One-Time Intensive Use, Then Unit is Cleaned and Stored
- Open unit and follow INITIAL SET-UP Steps 1. - 4.
- Remove and discard filter elements from both filter canisters.
- Completely rinse hoses, pump, and filter canisters with pure water.
- A disinfecting solution may be used: use 1/4 cup chlorine bleach per gallon
of cold water.
- Drain and air-dry components; reassemble unit for storage and store in a dry location.
Intermittent Use and Cleaning, Filter Elements Kept in Unit
- Open unit, set aside container lid, attach hoses and place ends of hoses
into a bucket containing a disinfecting solution of 1/4 cup chlorine bleach
per gallon of cold water.
- Pump disinfecting solution 30 strokes through system to flush; repeat
using a bucket of clean water.
- Remove intake hose and drain, pump unit until water is expelled.
- tip and tilt components in all directions to drain; leave lid off to allow
components to air dry.
- Store hoses inside filtration unit container and re-assemble unit.
