Ansel Adams Wilderness Trail Project: The Camps
Digital File and Log dif_log030920a.html
The project started here, at a base camp located at the Agnew Meadows Horse Camp, and the packers were first to arrive on Friday. Campy and Mike had trucks full of gear, which was quickly off-loaded for packing up to spike camp the next morning. Hikers left after a bacon and egg breakfast and a few hung around to watch the gear being laid out for the packers. The volunteer packers measured each pannier load with a scale which had to be within a pound or two for each side of the animal. We took the High Trail and arrived at spike just behind the packers, around 4 pm. The trail crew set up their tents and then helped setting up the kitchen and digging the latrine trench and enclosing it with screens. The packers returned to base and returned with more loads the following day. We're talking about the Antelope Valley Unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California, for the most part. Our local packers - of the Eastern Sierra BCHC unit - checked up on us during the week and gave an assist in packing out.
