Well, this is just a preview scene (you can click on the thumbnail to view a larger image). People are busy, the way work on the trail always goes (uh-huh!). Late afternoon even, Pete, in his yellow helmet has his hand on the GripHoist. Only one guy - an "observer" is just standing there, but no matter, these folks are the major part of the root ball extraction crew. Another part was the "swampers" who went around first to dig holes. All of these guys and gals, believe it or not, worked for food.

This is our base camp. People arrive - here's Pete with the equipment trailer. Then the kitchen trailer which gets set up inside the "Circus Maximus" kitchen tent. The packers include Bill from Bishop, and Mike who is riding by the kitchen tent. It's the crack of dawn now on Saturday, our first work day.

Getting Started up on the Trail

The first thing that happens on a workday is the packers get the equipment loaded which they will then bring up to the work site. This is Arleene with Dave coming up behind on foot. The packers kept the trail crew supplied with tools and water, and they themselves also worked the whole day on the trail.

Well there's Dave, hanging around with the GripHoist and waiting for things to happen. The prep work is done by Arleene and Doris here, both with loppers, and Campy with a shovel. The roots of each tree or bush, whatever you call it, have to be dug around until the root crown is exposed. Then the crew will cinch a cable or a chain around it, which Dave will then pull with the GripHoist. A sure-fire way of finding where the root ball is: Pete goes around with a chainsaw with a brushbar on it to cut away the accumulation of branches and growth so we can see what we are doing down at ground level.
