aboutnwsa01a

NWSA Volunteer Policies. Our AmeriCorps teams are made up of 2 leaders and 5 members. Participants are in their mid-20s and they have committed to work on a PCT trail team for the full summer and fall. Up to 4 community volunteers can join the AmeriCorps teams. Community volunteers span all ages and interest levels.

The projects offered by the NWSA fall within three difficulty levels:

Level 1 - Project is suitable for a wide range of abilities, may include hiking with little elevation change.

Level 2 - Project may include moderate hiking with some elevation change or more physically challenging work activities.

Level 3 - Project may include longer hikes, backpacking, significant elevation change, strenuous work activities or need for prior backcountry experience. Suitable for fit volunteers looking for a physical challenge.

After you sign up for a specific project, the team will meet you at a designated trailhead or meeting spot. The AmeriCorps team will provide a safety talk and tool use training, and then the work begins. Volunteers are expected to work full 6 - 10 hour days and assist with limited chores around camp. On the last day of the project, the team and the volunteers will break camp. Our program is offered to you free of charge. The AmeriCorps team will provide all food, water, kitchen supplies, tools, work gloves, and protective safety gear, including a hard hat. Volunteers will need to provide their own tent, sleeping bag, and personal gear. Also, volunteers are expected to arrange their own transportation to the trailhead (car pools may be available). Projects vary in length and volunteers are welcome to join the AmeriCorp team starting on the first day of the project or if the project falls over a weekend, you can join the team on Friday evening. First priority is given to volunteers who are interested in joining the crew for the full week.
