The Iditarod Trail was developed as a response to gold rush era needs. Its antecedents were the Native trails of the Tanaina and Ingalik Indians and the Inupiaq and Yupik Eskimos. They knew the route and had developed winter modes of trave - the dogsled and snowshoe. The peaceful collaboration of Native groups with the newcomers made settlement easier. The Iditarod National Historic Trail , Inc. works to preserve, protect and maintain the historic, educational and cultural values of the Iditarod National Historic Trail System. Whether you are on a local trail section, constructing a shelter cabin or repairing a ridge-line trail along Rainy Pass, INHT programs get you involved!
