The Hudson Valley Rail Trail runs along the former rail bed of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. It stretches 5 miles, from the old railroad bridge over the Hudson between Poughkeepsie and Highland, meandering up and through the hamlet of Highland then heading west joining up with Route 299 half way to New Paltz. The HVRT encourages walking, biking, horses, cross country skiing and snow shoeing during daylight hours. Once the paving is completed roller skates and rollerblades will be allowed. Motorized vehicles, alcoholic beverages, open fires and camping are not allowed along the trail. The Hudson Valley Rail Trail Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating, maintaining, promoting, and improving the Hudson Valley Rail Trail for the benefit of the public. Examination of the Web site given above doesn't reveal the performance of trail maintenance in the usual sense.
