This trail is named in honor of Benton MacKaye whose vision inspired the creation of the Appalachian Trail. At present, the trail extends from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to US Hwy 64 and 74 near the Ocoee River in Tennessee, a distance of 90.9 miles. It is hoped that the trail will eventually continue through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to rejoin the Appalachian Trail, after 273.4 miles. Since the BMT is a trail in progress, most of the activities of the Association center around trail development and construction, as well as maintenance and repair of existing sections.
