The Six ATC Trail Crews (Cont.)
Rocky Top Crew Early Sep to end Oct, The Rocky Top Crew is sponsored by the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, National Park Service, and ATC. The 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park cross the Trail's highest point and traverse the most diverse ecosystem and largest roadless area along the Trail. Half of the Appalachian Trail in the Park is open to horse use, and the crew's current work involves reconstructing those sections where horses and hikers share the Trail.
Smokies Wilderness Elite A.T. Crew (SWEAT) Mid Jun to Mid Aug, the Smokies Wilderness Elite AT crew (SWEAT) is something completely different than other ATC trail crews. Instead of focusing on heavy construction projects, this crew will complete much-needed maintenance in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. the SWEAT Crew is a mobile crew which focuses on performing basic maintenance such as cutting back vegetation, removing blowdown, and clearing waterbars.
