High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew New Opportunity!

October 2011: - This trip has changed.

Start Date: October 1
End Date: October 7

(NOTE: We still have space available for this event)

Project Name: PCT Trail Kennedy Meadow
Event Type: Trail Crew Special Event
Limited to 15 volunteers
Project location: PCT Trail from Kennedy Meadows north to the Inyo National Forest Boundary.

Project description:

This October, a new variation on our regular trail work theme has presented itself.

From October 1-7, we will be working the Pacific Crest Trail, north of Kennedy Meadows in the Southern Sierra, from the Border of Inyo National Forest south about 7 miles, along with some of the adjacent feeder trails.

This is nothing unusual. Normally, we would have to hike in the 10 or so miles to establish the base camp, and have our gear, food, and tools brought in by pack train. We were to have done this trip in May of this year, but got shut out by the heavy snow, so rescheduled it.

However, there is another option. Because of the lateness of the season, we will need to site our camp near the Kern River at the northern end of the PCT work area, to have access to plentiful water, It turns out that in mid-summer, there is an easy popular 4WD jeep trail that opens into this area, the Monache Meadows Jeep Trail, which runs about 8 miles, and can drop us right into the area where we need to set up our base camp.

So, we have decided to change the trip into our first Four Wheelin Drive Trip! The 8 mile off-road trail is rated as "easy", with only a very short stretch requiring 4WD, and high clearance, and the ford of the river. If you have a 4WD vehicle, you can drive your own car to the campsite. If not, we will arrange a carpool from the beginning of the off-road trail.

Here is a trip report and pictures of a couple that went in fishing and camping the weekend of 8/7/2011, to give you an idea of conditions click here:  Trip Report.

We will walk from our base camp to the PCT to work each day, which will vary from less than a mile to the farthest distance of 6 miles, doing the usual trail work of tree cutting and tread work. The trail in this area is gently sloped, there are no big grades. The elevation in the area is around 8,000 feet. The trout fishing on the Kern River is supposed to be amazing.

Projects:

The Kennedy Meadow project is dedicated to trail maintenance on the Pacific Crest Trail. This section of the PCT has not received managed trail maintenance in the past several years, and is in need of trail tread and drainage work, as well as clearing of downed trees

Work to include:
1. Brush trail four feet out from center line.
2. Repair and clean existing water bars
3. GPS and accurately map - existing water bars
4. Install new water bars if needed
5. With the use of cross cut saws remove any fallen trees that are impeding trail conditions for hikers.
